Every December, the same thing happens across the valley. Somebody spends a Saturday on a ladder with three tangled boxes of big-box lights, gets half the roofline done before the light goes, and ends up with a run that sags at the corners and a string that dies in the first real rain. Meanwhile the house down the road looks like it belongs on a Christmas card, and the difference isn’t taste or budget — it’s that theirs was measured, custom-cut and installed by someone who does this for a living.

That’s what we do. Napa Christmas Lights is a local, owner-operated holiday lighting company serving Napa Valley and the Sonoma side. We use commercial-grade C9 LED lighting cut to the exact dimensions of your roofline — not retail strings stretched to fit — and every install includes maintenance through the season and full takedown and storage after the holidays. You never store a box of lights again.

What makes a professional install different

The gap between a professional roofline and a DIY one comes down to four things, and none of them are about spending more:

  • Custom-cut lengths. Your roofline gets measured and the socket wire is cut to fit it exactly. No doubled-up runs at one corner and a dark gap at the other.
  • Commercial-grade components. C9 LED bulbs in weather-rated sockets on heavy-gauge wire, rated for outdoor winter use — not the seasonal retail sets that fail after two years.
  • Correct clips for the surface. Gutter line, shingle edge, tile edge and fascia each need a different attachment. Nothing gets stapled, nailed or drilled into your house.
  • Weatherproofed connections. Sealed connections and proper drip loops so the first heavy rain doesn’t trip a breaker and drop half the display.

Our services

Residential Christmas light installation

Rooflines, peaks, eaves, columns, walkways, wrapped trees, hedges and wreaths — from a clean single-story outline to full estate displays. Design, installation, in-season maintenance, takedown and storage included. See residential installation →

Commercial and winery holiday lighting

Tasting rooms, hospitality entrances, event lawns, restaurants and retail frontages. Napa Valley properties host their biggest events of the year in December, and the lighting has to look intentional on arrival and photograph well after dark. See commercial and winery lighting →

Permanent architectural lighting

Track-mounted programmable LED lighting installed once and used year-round — warm white for everyday, color for the holidays, controlled from your phone. No annual install, no ladders, ever. See permanent lighting →

Takedown, storage and maintenance

Included with every install, and available on its own if someone else put your lights up. We pull everything in January, label it and store it — so next season starts with a phone call, not an attic search. See takedown and storage →

Tile roofs: why we install from the ladder, never the roof

A large share of Napa, Yountville and American Canyon homes are under clay barrel or concrete tile, and tile is the single most common way a holiday lighting job goes wrong. Tile cracks under a boot. A cracked tile isn’t just an apology — it’s a leak path that shows up in the first February storm, long after the lights come down and nobody connects the two events.

So we work tile homes entirely from the perimeter. Gutter-line clips carry the same clean roofline outline without anyone ever standing on the tile field, and where a home has no gutter, tile clips grip the edge course. On steep barrel-tile ridgelines we simply don’t quote a run across the tile — we put that part of the budget into trees, columns, entries and walkway lighting, which photograph better anyway. We call it a tile-safe install, and it’s the reason tile-roof owners tend to call a professional in the first place.

What we won’t do

  • We don’t walk clay or concrete tile roofs, and we won’t quote runs that require it.
  • We don’t staple, nail or screw anything into your fascia, siding or roofing.
  • We don’t install customer-supplied retail light sets — we can’t warrant components we didn’t source.
  • We don’t do rooflines above the height our equipment safely reaches. If a section isn’t safe, we say so and design around it.

The Valley Bright Install — how the season works

  • 1. Walkthrough and design. We measure the roofline, look at the surfaces and the power situation, and talk through which features are worth lighting. You get a firm written price before anything is ordered.
  • 2. Custom cut to your home. Socket wire is cut to your measurements and bulbs are seated and tested on the bench before we arrive.
  • 3. Installation day. Typically a few hours. Clips matched to each surface, connections sealed and drip-looped, timer set for dusk-to-late-evening.
  • 4. In-season watch. If a run goes dark between installation and New Year, we come back and fix it. That’s included, not an add-on.
  • 5. January takedown and storage. We pull everything, label it by section and store it. Nothing goes in your garage.

What Christmas light installation costs in Napa Valley

Most of what drives price is simple: how much linear footage you’re lighting, how many stories, whether we’re working from ladders or reaching difficult peaks, and how much beyond the roofline you want lit — wrapped trees, columns and walkways add up quickly.

Property type Typical seasonal range What that usually covers
Single-story home, front roofline $600 – $1,200 Main roofline outline, install, in-season service, takedown and storage
Two-story or wraparound roofline $1,100 – $2,400 Multiple rooflines and peaks, entry accents, plus everything above
Estate / large frontage with landscape features $2,200 – $5,000+ Full rooflines, wrapped trees, columns, walkway and hedge lighting
Commercial, winery and hospitality Quoted per property Tasting rooms, entries, event lawns, extended run times

These are typical ranges for Napa Valley properties, not a quote or an offer. Your firm price comes after we look at the property.

Where we work

We serve the length of the valley and the Sonoma side: Napa, Sonoma, St. Helena, American Canyon, Yountville, Calistoga and Vallejo.

Common questions

When should I book?

Earlier than most people think. Installation runs from mid-October through mid-December, and the last two weeks of November are the first to fill. Booking in September or October gets you the install date you actually want; calling in December usually means whatever is left.

Do I need to be home for the installation?

No, as long as we’ve done the walkthrough and have access to the exterior and an outdoor outlet. Most installs happen while people are at work.

Whose lights are they — do I buy them?

Ours. The pricing covers the use of the lighting for the season, the install, in-season service, takedown and storage. You’re not buying inventory or finding somewhere to keep it in July.

What happens if a section goes dark in December?

Call or text and we come back out. In-season service is part of every install — a display that’s dark for two weeks of December is a failed job regardless of how it looked in November.

Will the install damage my roof or gutters?

Nothing is nailed, screwed or stapled. Clips are chosen for each surface and removed with the lights in January. On tile roofs we work from ladders at the perimeter and never walk the tile field.

Do you take the lights down too?

Yes, and it’s included. Takedown typically runs through January, weather depending. You don’t need to be home for that either.

Do you work on commercial properties and wineries?

Yes — tasting rooms, hospitality entrances, restaurants, retail frontage and event lawns. Commercial work is quoted per property because run times, scale and access vary so much.
